Implantology

Implantology is a surgical area of dentistry that is dedicated to the insertion of dental implants to restore lost teeth.

Dental implants are additions, like artificial roots, created to replace absent or missing teeth for any reason, capable of integrating to the point of being compatible in a healthy and totally natural way with the rest of the tissues of the mouth. They are currently manufactured preferably of chemically pure titanium and act as substitutes for dental root structures.

They offer a safe and permanent solution for the replacement of one or more teeth, functioning as support pillars for single crowns as well as fixed or removable partial or total bridges.

With the use of dental implants, the patient stops having to opt for solutions as uncomfortable and unattractive as removable prostheses and enjoys the comfort offered by natural teeth.

It is the most advanced dental replacement method for our mouth, as it allows us to recover esthetics and chewing capacity in an effective, comfortable and safe way.
The technology with which we work in Bonadex Dentists specialists in implants in Barcelona, allows us, in cases where it is necessary and provided that the patient’s characteristics allow it to restore the smile in a single day. This technique allows placing dental implants and provisional pieces in the same session or within a maximum period of 24 hours safely and without delay.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

HOW IS THE DENTAL IMPLANT HELD IN THE BONE?

By a biological process known as osseointegration, described by Professor Bränemark in the 1950s, by which the organism establishes a direct connection between the bone and the surface of the implant.

When osseointegration has occurred, the implant is firmly attached to the bone and can support a prosthesis to meet all functional and aesthetic requirements as if it were a healthy natural tooth. Another characteristic of osseointegration is that of being very stable over time, so these treatments offer satisfactory results that are enjoyed for many years.

HOW CAN I SOLVE THE ABSENCE OF AN ISOLATED TOOTH?

By means of a dental implant, without the need to use or scale down the adjacent healthy teeth, which is necessary if a bridge is placed on the teeth.

An individual or independent crown is fitted on the implant, which can be cemented or attached to the implant by means of a small invisible screw. With this, a natural appearance and chewing and speech functions are completely restored without having to rely on adjacent teeth.

HOW CAN I RESTORE THE LACK OF SEVERAL TEETH IN A ROW?

When several teeth have been lost, whether they are anterior or posterior, and the section without teeth is small, absences can be replaced by a fixed prosthesis called a bridge, which can be supported by the natural teeth. But if you want to avoid scaling them down, it is more advisable to place several implants in the section without teeth to support the bridge.

When there are still natural teeth but the spaces without teeth are so large that they discourage the placement of a bridge resting on the patient’s own teeth, we must choose between a removable prosthesis with hooks, retainers and even palate, accepting the disadvantages that these types of prostheses involve, or opt for the placement of several implants to support the bridges.

Nowadays, in general, implants are the most advisable option.

IS THE TREATMENT WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS UNPLEASANT?

The surgical procedures of implant treatment are very well protocolized and are usually performed with minimal or no discomfort.

In the great majority of cases, they are performed under local anesthesia, just like many other dental treatments, and only the noise of the instruments and sensations of pressure or humming are perceived. In the postoperative period, slight discomfort may occur when the anesthesia wears off, although occasionally it may be more intense.

In a small number of people with a special predisposition, inflammation of the operated area and hematoma may occur, usually 24 hours after the intervention. These phenomena are merely a reflection of the reparative reaction of the tissues after the intervention and are not a problem.

In very specific cases, either by medical recommendation or because the patient requests it, the dental implants placement intervention will be carried out under general anesthesia, generally in a hospital.

Your implant team will recommend the best way to carry out the treatment and help you experience minimal discomfort after the placement of your implants.
